Personification: A figurative Language for Writers

A figurative Language in words of William Shakespeare

“Life were better ended by their hate,
Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love”
-Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare

Basically here, Romeo is saying that he’d rather die than live without Juliet. This foreshadows her death. Now here the reader can then suspect that should Juliet die in the future, Romeo would also follow the suit. Yes you are on the correct page , one of the most effective , figurative literary device which comes with a little personal vibes yes it’s Personification.

What is Personification ?

Personification is a literary method that imbues non-human or inanimate objects with human attributes. Non-human things might be considered things like animals, items, or even concepts. These things may be given human traits in the form of feelings, habits, or deeds that give life to inanimate objects. Personification frequently appears in both literary works and daily discourse. It can give normally lifeless objects or the subject’s life, vitality, and animation. It is basically used to energize your text, to bring a personal vibe and to turn an inanimate object into a living and a livelily human emotion. It helps the readers to create a connection between the characters and helps the readers to experience it all in one go.

Example of Personification

To create a good rapport between the reader and the scriptwriter, i.e., the audience and the scriptwriter. To convey the writer’s emotions strongly and to bring a lively touch to all the inanimate things. Personification helps to convey emotions and messages so beautifully that writers love to use it in their scripts.

Uses of Personification :

Personification is the most widely used literary device to establish a good rapport between the audience and the readers so that they would find it easy to connect with the story when they are brought into contact with some personalized inanimate object.

Let's have a look at some of the most common uses of personification :

1. Explain concepts more directly :

Personification helps to bring some personal touch and some personal vibes to the audience and helps the writer to directly convey their emotions without any barriers.

Let’s have a look at some of examples :

  • My alarm clock yells at me to get out of bed every morning.

An example of perfect personification can be found in a nursery rhyme :

  • “Hey Diddle Diddle,” where “ the little dog laughed to see such fun.”

2. Energize the text :

The energy level of the text is another important factor that helps the readers and the audience to be engaged in the content of the writer.

Let’s have a look at some examples :

  • The trees were begging for water.
  • My sun burnt skin was screaming.
  • My locker hates me.

3. Set the scene :

Setting the scene is not an easy task and especially the scene which involves lots of personalized inanimate objects subjected to lively emotions. The real challenge is to use personification at appropriate position to have it’s better and the best impact on the audience and the user.

Let’s have a look at some examples :

  • The thunder was grumbling in the distance.
  • The wildfire ran through the forest at an amazing speed.
  • The moon smiled at the stars in the sky.
